WCB Alberta progress report
A WCB-Alberta progress report updates the claim after the first physician report: what has changed, what you found today, and whether the worker can do regular, modified, or no work. It is not the first report, not a WSIB Form 26, and not an EI certificate. Submit through the channel WCB currently requires — usually myWCB.
What a progress report is for
The first report opened the medical file. The progress report is how WCB sees recovery. They already have the mechanism paragraph. Repeating “lifted a box at work” on visit four is not progress. Give new findings, new function, and a work status that a supervisor could use tomorrow.
Physicians submit progress reports through myWCB. Chiropractors and physical therapists have their own report types. Use the current WCB-Alberta channel. Do not mail an Ontario Form 26 to Edmonton.
Plateau is information
If nothing has moved in several visits, write that. A progress report identical to the last one, with another four weeks off work and no new plan, is how the file gets a medical advisor review — not because you were honest about a stall.
Who completes it
The clinician still treating the work injury. If care transferred, the current physician or nurse practitioner reports from their exam plus the chart and says when they took over. Do not complete a progress report for an injury you have not reassessed.
How to complete the update
- Claim number, date of injury, and date of this visit.
- Current diagnosis if it has changed — and why. A strain that is now a disc herniation needs the imaging or the new neuro finding.
- Objective change since last report: same tests, new numbers, or an explicit “unchanged.”
- Treatment this interval: visits attended, medication, specialist waits. Missed appointments without a lecture.
- Work: regular, modified with usable restrictions (weights, postures, hours), or off work, and until when.
- Next review date. “PRN” is not a date.
- Complications or a second injury. Do not hide a new shoulder problem inside the original lumbar claim without saying it is new.
Restrictions must still be shop-floor language. “Light duties” was not enough on the first report and it is not enough now.
Worked example (fictional)
Progress — lumbar strain, week 3, family practice
Fictional 29-year-old warehouse worker. Do not copy into a real WCB report.
Claim on file. DOI 2026-08-04. This visit 2026-08-25. Then: lumbar spasm, SLR negative, off patient-facing lifts, 10 kg cap. Now: walking in clinic without list, flexion improved, still guarded on repeated bending. Neuro intact. No imaging. Tx: PT 4 visits, naproxen as directed. Attended all. Work: can do seated scanning and 5 kg lifts to waist. No repetitive bending, no ladders. Reassess 10 days. Not regular duties yet. Not a first report. Not WSIB Form 26.
Why WCB comes back
- No work status, or “light duties” with no detail.
- Copying the first-report mechanism and calling it progress.
- Missing claim number or a visit date that is not on the chart.
- Submitting a first report again instead of a progress report.
- Using an Ontario or B.C. form in Alberta.

Frequently asked questions
When is this a progress report instead of a first report?
After you (or another clinician) have already sent WCB the first physician report for this injury. Later visits are progress. Do not send a second “first report” months later.
Is this the same as WSIB Form 26?
Same job, different board. Form 26 is Ontario. Alberta uses WCB-Alberta’s progress report through myWCB. Do not submit Form 26 to Alberta.
What if the worker is already back at regular duties?
Say so, with the date. A discharge progress report that confirms full duties is still useful. Do not leave the claim hanging on old restrictions.
